Guest post: Business Travel – Do’s and Don’ts

When you’re asked to go on your first business trip, whether domestic or overseas, it can be an exciting moment. There’s something inexplicable glamorous about the concept of business travel, however, as you’re likely to find out, the reality can be somewhat different!

While you might have the image in your head of being that pristinely presented mysterious business person who waltzes through the airport toting a designer briefcase, swanky carry on and paper thin laptop, the reality could easily be that ragged ball of stress racing through the airport trying to juggle the contents of their wardrobe and their office as they go.

Follow these top tips to ensure that you’re closer to the former than the latter:

Be Prepared

A good girl guide or boy scout is always prepared, and the first rule of business is ‘fail to prepare and you prepare to fail!’ Be sure to spend plenty of time pre-business trip researching every aspect, from the company/individuals that you’re being dispatched to meet, to every facet of your travel itinerary.

Research Timings

Timing are crucial – missed flights lead to missed meetings which is a complete business faux par. Make sure that you give yourself not only enough travel time but enough pre-travel preparation time. A frantic last minute hunt for an important document will get your business trip off to the most stressful of starts.

Stay at the Airport Hotel

One easy way to deal with many of the stresses and pressures of business travel is to book a stay at an airport hotel the night before the outward leg of your journey. For example, book a room at the Travelodge City Airport Hotel for easy access to London City Airport the following morning, free from traffic worries or last minute distractions. You can enjoy a comfy bed for the night, use the Wi-Fi to catch up on any work and wake refreshed and ready to start your journey un-hassled and stress free.

Travel Light

There’s a definite art to travelling light, and it’s a skill that you need to learn if you’re going to be travelling on business. Not only will you have your clothes and usual travel essentials to manage, you’ll also have work related items – paperwork and a laptop perhaps – and, at the end of the day, you do only have two hands, no matter how much of a business high flyer you are!

Limit your luggage to a small carry on case, to cut down on the time spent checking in and picking up luggage on arrival. If you need several outfits then pack items that can be mixed and matched to be worn more than once. For example, a simple shift dress can be worn for evening dinner meetings or industry networking events, as well as during the daytimes with a suit jacket.

With plenty of preparation, and a common sense approach, you’ll be a business travel pro in no time. Keep stress at bay and your business trips will run smoothly.
