I love a good market, whether it’s just for a browse or (usually) to enjoy food and other treats of the marketplace, hence making an effort to visit those of home – like Borough Market – and abroad.
On Saturdays, the Notting Hill area of London becomes home to Portobello Road Market, a popular street market renown for its second-hand clothes and antiques and a popular choice for visitors to London.
The main market day for antiques is Saturday but there are also fruit and vegetable stalls that trade throughout the week. These are the origins of the market, a fresh-food market followed by antique dealers in the mid 19th century. It is now the largest antiques market in the UK.
Portobello Road itself is not the average high street; a 2-mile stretch of narrow street, majority independent stores. As well as the antique stalls there are a whole host of arcades, galleries, shops and cafés.
Fresh fruit and vegetable sits next to freshly baked produce available to buy at the market.
There’s also some ‘unusual talent’ to be enjoyed as you explore the sights of Portobello Road Market.
Keep your eye’s open for the street art dotted around too… it’s pretty creative and certainly reminded me of street art in Berlin, especially with pieces like this being so high and not-so-obvious.
Cooked food options are available as well, prepared right before you and offered at very reasonable prices.
Have you visited Portobello Market? Any tips for future visitors?
Those market food pictures are making me incredibly hungry! Great job lady 🙂

Isn’t Portobello Market such a sensual treat? I spent many long hours there some months ago during my month-long UK trip, and posted a photo essay about it too!

It is a great and lively place, a great way to see the heart of London’s culture. On that note, I’m well overdue a return visit!
