Part 2: Sealife & acrobatics in Berlin #byExpedia

After the previous fun-filled evening, the following day in Berlin proved to be as exciting as the first, giving us a chance to take in more of the city. Highlights from the itinerary are featured below.

Aquadom (Sealife Centre)

After leaving Eurostars Hotel, we headed to Alexander Platz, a short stroll from the Aquadom, which would be our first stop off for the morning. With it being January, it was very quiet giving us a great chance to take in the sea life undisturbed. We enjoyed creatures from sharks to sting ray, crabs to starfish. Like many such centres, they are typically aimed at families with younger children to provide an educational experience, but we had a great time and really enjoyed a casual stroll around the centre.

Following that, we were scheduled to take a city tour, but not before a stop off at St.Mary’s Church close to Alexanderplatz.

From the church it was easy to use public transport for travel to Orangienstrasse Platz to meet the rest of the group for the Sandeman’s New Europe tour. This would be our introduction to the city and proved to be a great way to start absorbing the real, gritty side of Berlin. The tour lasted for around four hours and in all honesty we were so cold from the outdoor temperatures that we jogged the length of the Berlin Wall to Yamm bar for mulled wine!

This was the perfect antidote to our cold hands after a busy day in the snow, but I can imagine both the bar and the tour being even more fun in the warm weather – I’ll be checking it out again in summer 2013!

We were then scheduled to have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, so we cut our Yamm session short to locate the restaurant. 🙂

Hard Rock Cafe

The restaurant is located on Kurfürstendamm in the West End of Berlin. The area has plenty of shops of both mid range and high end if you’re seeking a little retail therapy but to be honest, we were surprised that so few people knew where the restaurant was situated. Once we had managed to locate it (with the help of a friendly Police Officer) we were able to get settled and most importantly at that stage…warm!

We were greeted at Hard Rock Cafe by an enthusiastic staff member that seated us and explained the menu. With it being part of the Expedia booking, we were able to select from the Gold menu which offers a good albeit limited selection of food from the American diner.

The restaurant is very well managed with orders taken promptly and service being swift yet friendly in keeping with expectations. The food was all to a high standard, well prepared and freshly served piping hot to our table.

LOFT Acrobatic Show

Our evening came to an end with a rushed exit from the Hard Rock Cafe to make it to the Chameleon Theatre in time to see LOFT Acrobatic Show.

The show promised to be a highly acrobatic performance by seven Canadian performers – it was exactly that. With a blend of professional and skilled creativity and touches of humour, it was a great show that succeeded in engaging the audience but also demonstrating the high level of skill in the performers.

Whilst I had initially been a little uncertain about whether I would enjoy the show, it was well worth seeing and lasts for around two hours. There’s so much energy and talent on the stage that it’s sure to capture the interest of all.

Sincere thanks to Expedia UK and readers of the Ad-lib Traveller for providing this opportunity for me to visit Berlin, Germany.
