Enjoying nature’s benefits at YS Falls, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica

I’m currently in Jamaica visiting family and exploring the island’s activities; regardless of how often I visit, there is always something fun to do! So I was thrilled to take a trip to St. Elizabeth and specifically to Lacovia to experience YS Falls – an attraction that I was previously only vaguely aware of.

Despite visiting Jamaica several times, I haven’t spent a great deal of time in the parish of St. Elizabeth, so my family and I took a trip from┬áPortland to explore this lesser-travelled area of the country.

The attraction consists of a 7 tiered waterfall, flowing into intermittent pools of varying depths, therefore the advisory is to check the depth of the water BEFORE you enter. Lifeguards are on hand at each pool to support visitors through the visit, just in case you do experience difficulties in the water.

Before arrival to the falls, customers are taken from the reception area to the attraction by tractor. A trailer attached to the back of the tractor takes around 20 passengers at a time through a farm filled with cows, horses and attractive scenery. In total the journey lasts for a little over five minutes, but made the perfect opportunity for me to take a few photos and start to get a feel for the clean and peaceful environment. There are several trailers in operation at any time, so you’re never waiting for long before your adventure begins.

At the base of the falls is a separate pool that is around 4ft deep, perfect for basic-swimmers (like myself) or those that want to stay on the lower levels of the falls.

From the base of the falls, you can store your goods in a locker and start the ascent on foot to the top of the falls. Walking to the top of the falls takes roughly 20 minutes at a medium pace, however each set of stairs have a rest point for you to take it at your own speed – and of course you can go into the pools at each point to cool down in the Jamaica sun!

Each pool varies in depth, with the deepest (pictured below) being around 8 foot deep. Be sure to check before you enter the water! The attraction does cater for everybody though, so you will always find a place for you.

We had a fantastic visit to the falls. Having previously visited other waterfalls in the country, YS Falls offers a relaxing option for this area of the country. With a varied selection of pools, a picnic area and other activities such as zip-lining and attractive gardens, there is something for every type of visitor. There is a real mix of customers of differing age groups and the trip can be as active (or inactive) as you like.

Many thanks to YS Falls for the complimentary access to the attraction.
